Boost Your Brain Power - Tai Chi Class

Boost Your Brain Power - Tai Chi Class

A study in the  Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, which included 120 healthy older people in China, showed doing tai chi can boost your brain power. Those who practiced this “moving meditation” technique three times a week for 40 weeks showed increases in brain volume, as seen on MRI, as well as improvements on several tests of memory and learning, compared to those not doing the exercise who had normal age-related brain shrinkage.

Previous research has shown that aerobic activity is good for the brain, but this study suggests that a more gentle form of exercise is also beneficial.  Another benefit of tai chi: it improves balance and decreases the risk of falls. (December 2012 UC Berkeley Wellness Letter)

Lace Up Your Running Shoes!

Lace Up Your Running Shoes!

On Saturday, December 14th, the Tulare Outlet Center will host the 2013 Tinsel Toy 5K run/walk and ½ mile walk to benefit the Salvation Army of Tulare.

Early registration fee is $25. You can also register on race day for $30. The first 200 to register will receive a shirt. Everyone will receive a goody bag while supplies last.

“The holiday season is about giving and this is a way to share with the less fortunate children of the community the spirit of the holidays. At the same time there are so few running/walking races in the valley this time of the year it allows avid runners and walkers the opportunity to get out, stretch their legs and hit the pavement.”

Participants are being asked to bring an unwrapped toy to be donated to the Salvation Army.

Health Center opens at Sierra Vista Elementary School

Clovis children and their families now have better access to health services at the newly expanded Sierra Vista Elementary Health Center.  Today, October 25th,  the District’s nursing services staff and families are opening the doors on the health center’s new location.  Before the addition of the building on the Sierra Vista campus, children were seen in a makeshift facility housed in the school’s former administrative offices.  Now, the Health Center, which serves approximately 30 children each day, has a home of its own.
