Clovis Fire Department Open House Kicks Off Prevention Week
Emergency response calls keep each of the five Clovis fire stations busy throughout the week. From fires to vehicle accidents, most are familiar and may have even been the direct recipient of assistance from the brave men and women of the Clovis Fire Department. But did you know that those responses are just a portion of what a full-service fire department provides?
This year as part of Fire Prevention Week, Clovis Fire Department is opening the doors of Fire Station 5 (Temperance and 168) to the public on October 8th, 2011 from 10:30am – 2:00pm for a behind the scenes tour of how your fire department responds to emergencies from basic bone fractures to complex hazardous materials spills. While the Fire Prevention Week theme is “Protect Your Family From Fire”, the Clovis Fire Department is expanding the theme to highlight the all-hazards preparedness of the department and simple things families can do to prepare at home.
On the Department side, families attending the open house will have the opportunity to experience climbing ropes and netting similar to what the Urban Search and Rescue Team does when performing rescues in high-rise or steep terrain. Those fascinated with science will enjoy exploring the world of our Hazardous Materials Team and HazMat unit that respond to chemical spills/releases. Personnel will be on hand with activities that allow young people to put their five senses to work in identifying unknown (but safe) items just as hour team does when performing their analysis. For those interested in becoming better prepared at home or volunteering with the Department, the Clovis Emergency Response Team (CERT) will be on site. If you’ve never seen the inside of a fire station or sat in the cab of a fire truck, if there are questions that you’d like to ask a Clovis firefighter, then bring the whole family down to the annual Clovis Fire Department Open House. It’s guaranteed to be informative and a good time for all.
