Taekwondo Team Headed to Junior Olympics! | Community Spirit
A big group of Clovis and Fresno athletes is headed to the Junior Olympics in Dallas, Texas this week. Many of these Sunnyside Taekwondo team members are returning Jr. Olympians. One member of this talented team is a father of two teenage girls competing in the Senior Division!
These athletes earned their place to the USAT Nationals by competing in numerous qualifiers in Northern and Southern California this winter and spring. They are considered the best in their belt, age, and weight level in the Western United States - and hope to say the same for the ENTIRE United States after their competition in Dallas.
Nationals competition begins Thursday, June 28th and continues through Thursday, July 5th at the Dallas Convention Center.
The martial art of Taekwondo originated in South Korea over 2000 years ago. It is defined as ‘the way of the hand and foot.’ Each athlete tries to earn points by landing kicks to the opponent’s head and body and punches to the body. It is an Olympic sport and will be a part of the Summer 2012 Olympics in London.
Good luck Team Sunnyside!
